"It is the writer who might catch the imagination of young people, and plant a seed that will flower and come to fruition."  Isaac Asimov

The Johnston Heights English Language Arts (ELA) Department provides a strong foundation in both language and literacy for our students.  This foundation will empower our students to be life-long readers and writers, and will provide them with critical language and communication skills necessary for future success; whether in post-secondary studies, careers or community.  All ELA courses reflect both the core competencies and content of the BC Ministry curriculum.  For our Grade 8-10 students, IB Middle Years Programme approaches to learning are embedded into the curriculum. Among these are: communication, collaboration, research, self-management and thinking.  In addition, key characteristics of an IB Learner are reinforced.

Johnston Heights ELA courses expose our students to a variety of written and digital texts representing diverse cultures and communities, along with Canadian and First People's literature.  Oral communication skills are strengthened through activities such as collaborative discussion, debate and Socratic seminars.  成人视频 will explore themes and perspectives meant to connect them closely to the world around them, and will be able to convey their own unique ideas through formal written expression or digital media presentations and projects.

Courses offered by the ELA Department include, but are not limited to:

  • English Language and Literature 8
  • English language and Literature 9
  • First Peoples Literary Studies and Composition English 10
